Dental implants are a remarkable way to replace missing teeth. They do, however, require an important oral surgery to place the implant as well as a dedicated recovery period as the implant heals to the surrounding bone and tissues. Implant healing should be taken very seriously, so knowing your post-operative instructions are critical.

While you’ll gain complete dietary freedom after your dental implant process is complete, your days recovering from implant surgery demands certain food limitations. After a dental implant surgery, patients should adhere to a soft diet to avoid disrupting the surgical site and facilitate optimal healing and success.  Keep in mind, you’ll be protecting your comfort too by sticking to these eating rules.

Don’t Skip on Nutrition

While you may be restricted on foods for the first several days after your surgery, it is important to get the nutrients your body needs for optimal healing. Avoid skipping meals and try to make your liquids and soft-food choices as nutrient dense as possible.

Start with Liquids

It is recommended that patients begin with liquids immediately after surgery. Not only do you need to stay well hydrated, but recovering patients should avoid chewing food until anesthetics have worn off and tongue sensation has returned. Progressing to solids over a few days is often best. Until then, consider healthy pureed foods!

Avoid Straws and Hot Foods/Beverages

Hot foods and beverages can slow healing and damage the delicate tissues that are trying to heal. In addition, make sure you do not drink with a straw, as the sucking motion can dislodge blood clots and physically damage the surgical site.

No Smoking or Drinking

Smoking is an absolute no when it comes to healing after dental implant surgery. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor and can impede proper blood flow to your gums, which greatly slows down overall healing and threatens your immune system. Consuming alcohol and smoking can sabotage your dental implant investment!

Food Suggestions for Dental Implant Recovery

Before your dental implant surgery, it is beneficial to plan ahead. This includes having recovery-friendly foods and drinks on hand. Examples include the following:

  • Soft fruits (bananas, peaches)
  • Soft breads/grains (oatmeal, rice, mashed potatoes)
  • Cooked veggies (squash, sweet potatoes)
  • Dairy/Protein (yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese)
