Signs You Need Dental Implants

Dental implants serve the sole purpose of replacing teeth that are missing. This includes teeth that were lost due to disease, decay or trauma, as well as teeth that may not have been present when you were born. Your mouth is composed of 32 teeth. Besides your 4 wisdom teeth, you need all of the others to be present to achieve ideal alignment, function and appearance within your smile. Even just one missing tooth in the back of your smile can cause bigger problems over time, such as bone loss in your jaw, shifting adjacent teeth and more.

While dentures and bridges are still very common, dental implants are considered the best way to replace missing teeth. They are composed of a titanium post that is anchored in your jawbone – for life! On top of the implant is an abutment that attaches to a prosthetic tooth or set of teeth. This allows for a natural-looking restoration that looks and feels most like a real tooth.

Bridges and dentures are almost always cheaper options, so why are they inferior? Traditional dentures and bridges are not anchored into your jawbone like a dental implant. A bridge is often attached to crowned teeth on either side and a traditional denture stays in place with special adhesives. Both rest along the gum line and simply can’t provide the stability that an implant or implant-supported denture can deliver.

The issue of bone loss is also a primary drawback in choosing a bridge or denture. While your smile may look complete, your jawbone underneath is still lacking adequate stimulation due to missing tooth roots. Over time, the jawbone atrophies or resorbs within the body in response. This can not only change the way your denture fits, but it can also change your facial shape and make you look older than you really are. Dental implants are the only solution in restorative dentistry that provide a replacement tooth as well as a replacement tooth root!

Considering this information, there are three main reasons why patients choose dental implants. Do you identify with any of the following?

  • You currently suffer uncomfortable dentures
  • You avoid certain foods due to instable dentures
  • You are missing one or more teeth
  • Your mouth currently has bridges
